The Journey Begins Before The Ceremony

Part Two of the Six-Part Series: The Sacred Art of Holding Space

By Marla Lindner

Founder of Bufo Healing Sanctuary

When someone feels called to a sacred medicine ceremony, their attention is often focused on the experience itself. What will happen? What will they feel? What might they discover? But before stepping into that experience, there is an important question to consider. Are we truly prepared for what we are choosing to enter?

Preparation begins with an honest look at ourselves, our lives, our intentions, and the responsibilities that come with exploring altered states of consciousness. It is about understanding what we bring into an experience rather than focusing solely on what we hope to receive from it. I believe our physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual bodies are deeply interconnected. Each aspect of our being deserves consideration when exploring sacred medicine.

Our physical body is where we begin. We cannot separate our spiritual intentions from the physical body that carries us through this lifetime. Our health, medical history, medications, and overall well-being are important considerations when deciding whether a particular medicine is appropriate.

Every medicine has its own characteristics and potential risks. What may be suitable for one person may be unsafe for another. This is why medical screening and professional guidance are so important. A desire to explore consciousness does not remove the possibility of physical complications, and no spiritual intention can replace medical knowledge. Sometimes the most responsible choice is to seek additional evaluation, postpone an experience, or recognize that a particular medicine is not appropriate. Listening to our bodies also means respecting their limitations.

Our emotional well-being deserves just as much attention. We all carry experiences that have shaped us. Some have brought joy and connection, while others have left us with grief, fear, disappointment, or unresolved emotions. Before entering a ceremony, I believe it is worth reflecting on what is happening in our emotional lives. Are we moving through a significant loss? Are we experiencing major changes in our relationships? Are we feeling overwhelmed by circumstances we have not yet had the opportunity to process? There is nothing wrong with wanting change or seeking greater understanding. However, there is a difference between approaching an experience with openness and expecting the medicine to take away what we are feeling. Sacred medicine cannot promise that grief will disappear, relationships will change, or life's difficulties will suddenly be resolved. Emotional preparation involves acknowledging where we are, recognizing what we may need, and understanding the importance of having support beyond the ceremony.

Our mental well-being brings another layer of consideration. The mind continually interprets our experiences, creating stories, beliefs, and patterns that influence how we see ourselves and the world. Sometimes these patterns become so familiar that we no longer recognize their influence on our choices.

Preparation offers an opportunity to become curious about our own thinking. What beliefs do we carry about ourselves? Are we searching for answers, validation, or certainty? What expectations might influence how we interpret an experience? Powerful psychedelic experiences can also be psychologically overwhelming. Mental health history, current stability, and appropriate professional support all matter.

For me, this is where intention becomes especially meaningful. An intention is not a demand we place upon the medicine. It is an opportunity to become more conscious of why we are choosing the experience. We cannot control every aspect of an altered state of consciousness, and we should not measure its value by whether it matches what we imagined. Approaching the unknown with curiosity allows room for experiences we may not have anticipated.

Spiritual preparation also deserves reflection, although I believe it is something deeply personal. For me, spirituality is connected to our relationship with Great Spirit, God, Source, Creator, or whatever name resonates with our own understanding of that powerful divine presence that exists within each of us. It is also connected to our consciousness and our exploration of who we are beyond our physical existence. Spiritual preparation does not require someone to follow a particular belief system or accept someone else's interpretation of consciousness. Each of us has the freedom to explore what spirituality means to us. What do we believe? What are we questioning? How do we connect with ourselves, with nature, and with the divine presence we recognize within?

These questions can offer meaningful reflection regardless of whether someone ever participates in a ceremony.

I also believe it is important not to measure spiritual growth by the intensity of an experience. A powerful journey does not automatically mean someone has reached a higher level of consciousness, just as a quiet experience does not mean someone has failed. Our spiritual journeys cannot be measured against one another. What matters is the awareness we develop and how it influences the way we live. This brings us to an important part of the process that I believe deserves greater attention.

Integration. A profound experience may offer a new perspective, but awareness and lasting change are not necessarily the same thing. We may recognize a pattern and still need time to understand it. We may see something about ourselves more clearly and still have to make different choices in our everyday lives. This is why I believe integration begins before the ceremony. The moment we begin reflecting on our behaviors, relationships, intentions, and patterns, we are already developing the awareness that supports integration. We can begin through honest conversations, journaling, spending time in nature, seeking support when needed, or becoming more conscious of how we respond to everyday situations. When a ceremony becomes part of someone's path, this foundation can support the process of making sense of the experience afterward. But what happens when we return to our daily routines? How do we respond when familiar challenges arise? Are we willing to recognize the choices that no longer support the life we want to create? Can we apply what we have learned through our actions, relationships, and decisions?

These questions may not have immediate answers. Growth does not always happen in one extraordinary moment. Sometimes it unfolds gradually through the small choices we make every day.

At Bufo Healing Sanctuary, I believe preparation should encourage people to become active participants in their own journeys rather than placing all their expectations upon a medicine or ceremony. It is about developing an honest relationship with ourselves, recognizing our personal responsibility, and understanding that choosing not to participate can be just as meaningful as choosing to proceed. There is no need to rush into an experience because someone else has had a profound journey or because we believe we should be further along in our spiritual development. There is no timeline for consciousness, and there is no requirement to experience sacred medicine in order to grow. Sometimes we simply need more time to understand ourselves, care for our well-being, and recognize what is unfolding in our lives. I believe preparation invites us to approach our choices with greater understanding and respect for the complexity of who we are. It is not about becoming perfect, eliminating uncertainty, or expecting a particular outcome. It is about recognizing that we have an active role in our own development, both before and after any experience.

The ceremony may last hours, but the awareness we develop through preparation and integration can influence how we live long afterward. The journey does not begin when the ceremony starts. It begins with the choices we make long before we arrive.

With love, compassion, awareness, and gratitude,

This article offers educational and personal perspectives, not medical advice. Sacred medicines carry medical, psychological, and legal risks, and preparation does not eliminate those risks.
