A Comprehensive Guide for Your Experience at Innerbloom Ketamine Therapy

We understand that embarking on a new experience like ketamine therapy may make some people nervous, especially because it is uncharted territory for many, and it concerns your mental health. One thing that helps put my mind at ease when starting something new is knowing every detail about the experience beforehand.

Preparation is essential before starting ketamine therapy, and that includes understanding all the aspects of what to do and expect before, during, and after your infusion. Let this guide be your preparation companion at Innerbloom, providing you with all the essential information about starting this life-changing journey.

DAY BEFORE YOUR INFUSION:

Rest:

  • While a poor night's sleep won't ruin your infusion, try and go to bed at your normal time to rest your body and mind.

Avoid Alcohol:

  • Alcohol can cause dehydration, potentially making starting an IV for your infusion more challenging.
  • Abstain from alcohol to avoid a hangover or increased anxiety during the infusion.

MORNING OF YOUR INFUSION:

Avoid Food, But Hydrate:

  • Avoid solid food three hours before your appointment and ensure you stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Proper hydration helps facilitate the smooth insertion of an IV

Caffeine:

  • If possible, avoid caffeine intake.
  • If you can't skip your morning coffee, consider reducing the amount to keep your nervous system calm during the ketamine therapy.

Time:

  • Arriving a few minutes early allows you to take a moment to relax outside, practice breathing exercises, meditation, or mindfulness to calm your mind before the infusion.

Medications:

  • Take your prescribed medicines as directed, especially antihypertensives.
  • If you take benzodiazepines (e.g., Xanax), refrain from taking it on the day of your infusion.

What to Bring:

  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes.
  • Everything else needed during the infusion, such as eye masks, headphones with music, and a blanket, will be provided.

ARRIVAL AT INNERBLOOM:

Parking:

  • There's a free parking lot right in front of Innerbloom, and additional free parking is available on Monterey Street.

Ride:

  • You'll need a ride home after the infusion, and getting an Uber is quick and convenient from Innerbloom.
  • If you bring a guest, they can wait for you in the lobby.

First Visit:

  • Please arrive 10 minutes early for your first appointment, so Dr. Rivas can make sure that you're familiar with the process as well as address any questions you may have.

The Surrounding Area:

  • For coffee, Skippers next door to Innerbloom offers the best coffee in town, especially their Matcha. Say "Hi" to the friendly owners and watch out for the maple scone.
  • For food, across from Innerbloom, Hoagies serves a wonderful breakfast burrito, and PETRA nearby offers delicious Mediterranean food. SLO provisions also has fresh and healthy sandwiches, salads, and soups.

THE INFUSION:

The Experience:

  • The infusion lasts approximately 45 minutes. For treating pain-related conditions, infusions may range between 1-3 hours.
  • The total appointment duration is about 1-1.5 hours.
  • You'll sit in a comfortable reclining chair with eye shades, headphones playing curated music, and a soft blanket.

Sitter:

  • Either Dr. Rivas or another team member will be with you in the room for the entire duration of the infusion.

Therapy Dog:

  • Eli, a small golden retriever, can be present during your infusion; if you prefer not to interact with her due to allergies or other reasons, just let us know and we will accommodate your preference.

POST-INFUSION:

Recovery:

  • Most patients feel back to baseline within 3-4 hours after the infusion.
  • Ketamine's half-life is around 3 hours, so it will be out of your system on the same day as the infusion.
  • You can recover in the lobby while waiting for your ride.
  • Our appointments are scheduled in two-hour increments, so we ask that you please respect the next arriving patient.
  • Plan to take the rest of your day off. Our advice is to avoid going back to work the same day.

Listen to Your Body:

  • If you feel tired, take a nap or go to bed early.
  • You can expect to return to work, school, and your daily routine the next day.
  • Refuel with a healthy meal.

Sleep:

  • Rest is essential after the infusion. Some patients may find it difficult to sleep that night, while others might have a very restful slumber.

Avoid Screens:

  • I recommend putting down your phone or computer after the infusion.
  • Emails, work, and busy life can wait until the next day.

Process and Reflect:

  • Share your experience with friends and loved ones if you feel the urge.
  • Journaling can be a helpful way to reflect on your ketamine experience.
  • Consider making an appointment with a therapist to discuss and integrate the insights from the infusion.

In conclusion, being prepared for your ketamine therapy experience with this comprehensive guide will provide you with all the necessary information on what to expect before, during, and after your infusion.

Remember to take care of yourself post-infusion, find time to rest, and reflect on your journey as you embark on this healing experience. The Innerbloom team is here to support you throughout this transformative process towards wellness.
