I have been involved with psychedelics and the psychedelic process for over 28 years. I myself have experienced several hundred personal psychedelic journeys, the majority with the use of LSD and psilocybin. I also I have some experience with MDMA, DMT, San Pedro cactus, peyote and datura. The healing of my own childhood traumas and the discovery of functional effective mental health practices were developed in the real world with all the pressures that come with this life. My childhood and adolescence were difficult. When my father passed, I was still a young man, and I came face to face with the limitations of western understanding of mental health. This is when I found the powerful practice of Qi Gong breath work and meditation. Up to that point my personal exploration with psychedelics was motivated by my difficult childhood experiences. As a result, those early years of psychedelic experimentation were uninformed, untrained, aggressive and reckless. Because of this, I got to experience the full spectrum of things that can go right and the worst of what can go wrong during psychedelic journeys. As I matured, I reshaped my relationship with psychedelics and my entire viewpoint on the world. But this was only the beginning of the journey. In 2008 I met a woman that I fell deeply and uncontrollably in love with. We traveled the world together and had an amazing romance. But 6 years later on December 10th 2014, we found her body, she had died tragically of a drug overdose. This monumentally painful experience split my life in two and set me on the path to learning the mental health fundamentals that I understand today and brought my spiritual connection and understanding to far greater depths. I then turned my focus to mental health work and began working with veterans with PTSD, people with treatment resistant depression, substance abuse issues and those trying to recover from the kind of deep loss I had been through. I have not had formal training and all my knowledge and skills were developed out of necessity and functionality. This journey had led me to be able to shed light into the dark areas of others lives.

The Process

STEP

1

After 28 years of psychedelic experience, I have arrived at a multifaceted approach to mental, emotional, physical and spiritual well-being. Initially I start off with a process of assessment and sober practice utilizing a combination of guided meditation, gestalt therapy techniques and breath focus that is heavily influenced by medical Qi Gong practice. With those that are interested in taking the step to a guided psychedelic journey this phase is tailored to each individual and may require more or less preparation depending on the individual. Some people may get all the benefit they need even without the psychedelic experience. My perspective formed over these years of experience is that the journey of daily practice and focus on the development of fundamental skills fostering mental, emotional and spiritual well-being is the meat and potatoes of mental health and that the psychedelics are in addition to this practice, and in a way a bonus, a vehicle to deeper spiritual understanding. Without this fundamental practice and understanding, psychedelics can have a deleterious effect and so should be approached with caution. An attitude fostering skill development and daily work is really the foundation of health above the ingestion of psychedelics. The skills formed this way pave the way to attaining the freedom to use psychedelics as the powerful spiritual vehicles they are, similar to training to become a pilot before actually flying a plane. My perspective on mental health is that it is not innate and our world is difficult and abrasive so mental health is a life-long skill and practice.

I utilize the 7 root fundamental skills to developing and maintaining mental, emotional and spiritual health. The first fundamental skill is exposing, identifying and processing past trauma. This is done through guided one on one sessions exploring inwardly to find sore spots from the past that require processing. The processing of past trauma always requires forgiveness and forgiveness must be authentic. Thusly, depending on the severity this can require many hours of work and revisiting memories multiple times. The process is not strictly cognitive and is instead a process in which the practitioner is lead into a deep state of relaxation and is confronted with bodily sensation associated with one’s emotional state.
STEP

3

The second fundamental is encouraging practitioners to engage in periods of “not-doing”. Some people may refer to this as meditation, but at times I find this misleading. The intention of this fundamental skill is to refrain from as much stimuli and activity as possible. The eventual goal being to reach a state of complete inner quiet in which there are no thoughts, basically a complete stoppage of all activity even thought. This is closely linked to the first fundamental in that when ceasing activity, one will come face to face with the self and all that is contained there so that the ease with which one is able to maintain their state of non-activity is a measurement of how much past trauma has been processed or is unprocessed as the case may be.
STEP

4

The third fundamental is the practice of connecting with nature. Depending on the particular calling of the individual this may be done with exercises like hiking, climbing, surfing, kayaking, camping, etc. It may be more passive like bird watching, sitting at the beach, in the mountains, desert or forest or simply sitting in a garden or park and being present. One may even interact with pet animals, preferably outdoors. This is closely linked with the second fundamental as the cycles of nature highlight periods of activity and inactivity in the natural rhythms of life. There is a deep connection to nature within all of us and the psychedelic experience brings this out in us further eroding the illusion that we are separate from nature and the universe and showing us that we are an inseparable integral part of our world.
STEP

5

The fourth fundamental is the identification of operating belief systems within the practitioner’s cognitive framework. Many beliefs are automated within us, and we may not even notice all the things we choose to believe. In some cases, these beliefs are unfounded assumptions and certain beliefs can be the source of intense suffering. Thoughts may pass through our minds and can be very difficult to interrupt or stop but thoughts have no power unless we choose to believe what we think. This careful choosing of what one believes can restructure a person’s mental framework to a far healthier and peaceful set that has a lasting positive impact on the experience of one’s life.
STEP

6

The fifth fundamental is a focus on relationships. The skill of building, maintaining and repairing relationships is of foundational importance to mental, emotional and even physical health as we are undoubtedly social creatures. There are 5 steps to relationship repair and without following these steps in order, damaged relationships have a much slimmer probability of successful repair. This fundamental is also closely linked to the first fundamental because without processing our past trauma it is very difficult to forgive others or see ourselves and our actions honestly and we are likely to repeat toxic patterns in our relationships.
STEP

7

The 6th fundamental is diet and exercise and breath. Our being, our entire organism is connected with all of its parts. Maintaining a healthy diet and exercise routine goes a long way to bolstering our mental state to manage the stresses of our difficult world. Without putting healthy fuels in our body and maintaining our bodies through exercise and respect and care, physical health will not stay optimal and as physical health diminishes it becomes increasingly difficult to maintain a positive mental and emotional state. Breath is so important that it could easily be its own fundamental. Breathing has a deep relationship to our mental and emotional status and regulating the shift between the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous system. Breathing through focused training can be a vehicle of its own into a world of self-discovery, healing and exploration.
STEP

8

The 7th fundamental is the willingness to be uncomfortable and even the pursuit of being uncomfortable. It is very easy to not be aware of how much the seeking of comfort gets in the way of healing and creates stagnation. The body and mind and perhaps even the spirit need certain types of positive stress. You can see this in the evidence that cold plunges are good for the body and mind, sauna has numerous health benefits, fasting has many health benefits, strenuous exercise promotes a healthy body, and the list goes on. The over guiding principle here is in the willingness to do things that are outside of the comfort zone, to be willing to experience discomfort and endure that discomfort for a time. This fundamental is closely linked with the second fundamental in that the practice of not doing can indeed be very uncomfortable. At the highest levels of Buddhist meditation practice are examples of master practitioners who have self-immolated as a statement of protest, most notable was the monk Thic Quang Duc who lit himself on fire during the Vietnam War and sat peacefully in the lotus position without making a sound as he burned to death. Imagine how fearless you would be and the ease with which you could approach life if you were capable of anything even close to that. “The art of living is the art of dying.”

These fundamentals are the cornerstones of the foundation necessary to safely experience the psychedelic journey. Once beginning a psychedelic experience, it will start with a period of not doing often with music without lyrics or with sound instruments like gongs or singing bowls or simply the sound of nature. The encouragement is to let go and to try not to think and do not struggle to control the experience. Trust in yourself and trust the medicine and you will need to trust your guide. This is also why it is not advisable to rush into a psychedelic experience. Getting to know the guide and building trust is an important step in ensuring the successful outcome of a psychedelic journey. As the experience progresses there will come a moment where it is encouraged to gaze in mirror for extended periods of time seeking to see the “authentic self”. On other journeys this may not be part of the steps and instead a focus on integrating lessons from the deepest peaks of the psychedelic experience, but this is always very personal journey and as a guide I am there simply to support you and make sure you remain safe and that we deal with any anxieties, intense fears or incessant mind activity that may get in the way of the experience. Each journey is completely unique and so there may be several variations of what I have briefly outlined here. Some experiences call for different maneuvers and adjustments and those decisions come down to experience and what my gut tells me about what needs to be done in the moment.
