The Process
STEP
1
Intake & Screening
My screening process is extremely thorough and consists of a minimum of three pre-ceremony sessions that includes verbal discussion and a written assessment questionnaire. When I screen potential clients verbally over the phone my intention is to gain understanding in several areas.
1) Is the client psychologically and emotionally ready to work with psychedelic medicines?
2) Are the clients’ therapeutic goals, intentions, and expectations of the medicine in alignment with what a specific medicine can provide.
3) Does the client have the emotional capacity to feel safe in their soma (body). I look at capacity to hold uncomfortable emotions, how is their window of tolerance, what are they holding in the vagal nerve.
4) I make sure the client understands psychedelic medicines are not a magic pill. I explain to potential clients the medicine is a vehicle or tool that allows us to get out of our own way, drop into the underworld of psyche (the shadow) to gain clarity and understanding around trauma wounding or invasive memories, avoidance, denial or repression of certain emptions. Doing so assists us in gaining insights and revelations in numerous areas of our life, experience spiritual growth and evolution, and experience the mystical and the numinous.
5) I want to make sure the client is serious about doing a deep dive into their unresolved issues. 6) I also want to see that they have tried other behavioral or alternative treatment modalities without success or significant movement.
STEP
2
Preparation Process
I follow the MAPS harm reduction protocols learned through informal training with MAPS third stage trial clinicians and in my formal psychedelic assisted training certification programs. My medicine ceremony assessments include a bio-psychosocial assessment questionnaire and my psychedelic-assisted therapy assessment.
I discuss the clients’ intentions, relationship to their body, trauma & wounding, medical history including recent blood work (have clients send these to me), chronic illnesses, active substance abuse, previous negative relationship with psychedelics and their support system.
I discuss how the clients experience with medicine may affect their partner or significant other. Additionally, I do a deep dive into the client’s spiritual belief system and post ceremony considerations. I put a lot of time and effort into advance preparations and make sure everything is ready to go when the client arrives. I take great care in creating a set and setting that is warm, inviting, quiet, offers privacy and the ability to go outside into nature. The living room environment has a cozy couch, is temperature controlled, with additional fans, several warm blankets and pillows, eye mask, and all medical supplies i.e. blood pressure cuff, Oximeter, thermometer, EMT quality medical kit, and canisters of oxygen if needed. Additionally, I have candles, various aromatherapy items essential oils, Palo Santo, Blue Lotus, Sage, etc….. The music playlists are all prepared in advance with numerous options based upon clients’ desires and needs.
Additionally, I provide an introduction presentation before each medicine ceremony, which includes a check-in, discussion about the medicine session process, what to expect, ceremonial agreements, followed by Q& A. During the introduction presentation each participant agrees not leave the venue until the facilitator formally closes the medicine ceremony.
STEP
3
Ceremony/In-Person Facilitation
My first priority is always the clients safety. I hold loving space for the duration of the medicine ceremony, assist clients in feeling comfortable and with processing of difficult experiences without interfering in their journey. My mantra with clients is usually allow and surrender.
STEP
4
Integration Process
At the end of every medicine ceremony clients are asked to journal about their medicine experience for as long as they need. I provide three integration sessions, or more if needed, with each ceremony. My integration process is more intuitive than structured. I take very detailed notes during each medicine ceremony. Initially, I ask clients to share their experience, insights and revelations based upon their journal notes and memory. We discuss any questions, concerns, confusions that may have come up during the medicine ceremony. I assist clients in gaining clarity and understanding around mystical and numinous experiences, process and integration these experiences. Then we discuss my notes in detail, while providing clients with the space to ask questions, go deeper into revelations, or anything else the client needs to assist them in their integration process. I also provide psycho-spiritual counseling and guidance as well, if asked.
