The Process

BEFORE YOU COME: Intentionally preparing your body and mind for immersion into a life-changing plant medicine healing experience is fundamental to your process of growth and transformation – alongside integration. How you choose to show up for the time before your retreat and after, is just as important as working with the medicine. Setting intentions provides a center point and an anchor should you find yourself experiencing moments of distraction or challenge during your time with us at Selva Madre. It supports you in coming to this work with clarity and groundedness. This is also an opportunity to create certain contracts or agreements with yourself that support holding yourself accountable for the changes that may be required during and after your retreat. Before you arrive at Selva Madre, we suggest taking the time to honestly get clear about why you are coming to this work. Remember, the medicine of this work is known to give you what you need, not what you ask for. With that, it is a beautiful practice to hold your intentions without expectations and with a lot of joy and trust in your unique process. Ayahuasca works and expresses itself differently for everyone and in every ceremony. However your experience may be, it is most important to honor what you’ve been shown and contemplate how you will move forward in maintaining your new perspective and insights. DIET Stop pork, all dairy, coffee, and alcohol 4 weeks prior to your retreat. No sexual acts/thoughts of any kind 2 weeks before ~ during ~ and 2 weeks after your retreat. (This is different for those that are dieting with Master Plants. Please consult Maestro Lucho for your post-diet requirements) We request following a healthy diet beginning at least 4 weeks prior to your arrival - avoid sugar, soda, greasy and heavily processed food. Avoid foods containing Tyramine (cured meats, soy and pickled foods) and limit foods with Tryptophan (turkey, canned tuna) for 1-2 days prior to the retreat. *Please note, those who are coming for a Master Plant Diet have different, more strict requirements. Please email us directly to inquire more.

IN CEREMONY: Ceremonies are held in our Maloca, a sacred temple space where you will receive your healing work from the Maestros. In this space, you will be supplied with a sleeping mat, a bucket for release, and blankets. You are welcome to bring anything into the space that you feel may be a supportive tool for you, including Mapacho, Agua De Florida, and even crystals/altar items that are supportive of your journey. Selva Madre's ceremonies are shorter than some centers, as the Maestros feel that private time with Ayahuasca is an important part of developing your relationship with this medicine. To begin, they will sing Icaros to clear, protect and ready the space in the temple and around the center so that you can meet the medicine on your own terms, and safely. The Maestros will then approach your mat to serve you the medicine. The quantity will usually be decided by the maestro, however, you are more than welcome to let them know if you would like more or less than what he has poured for you. We do recommend beginning with a smaller dose on the first night so you can become acquainted with the energy of Ayahuasca in a gentle way. Before you drink, we recommend bringing your intentions to the forefront of your mind, with a lot of gratitude, JOY, and respect for your process. The Maestros will then go around to everyone in the space and gives each Pasajero an individual Arkana, a song of healing, blessing, and then protection. If you would like to go deeper with the medicine, you are welcome to go up to the maestro and communicate this to them during the ceremony. They will then announce the ending of the ceremony and light the candles. You are more than welcome to stay in the Maloca or go to your hut as you choose. It’s normal to feel nervous when approaching Ayahuasca for the first time (or even later times). We find that coming with a strong intention for your ceremony, as well as taking time before the ceremony begins to create inner stillness can be helpful in navigating any fears or emotions that arise. We also recommend working with the tools you have to ground, center and come into presence with yourself before each ceremony. This is invaluable and is so supportive in making the most of your time here with us at Selva Madre. Purging is a process that happens in many ways and can look very different for everyone. It is normal to experience things like muscle twitches, sweating, yawning, sighing, crying – as well as vomiting and even diarrhea. These responses are all good signs that the medicine is working and you are successfully moving through your healing process. The Maestros are available for Integration the day following the ceremony and are typically held three times per week. This is your time to share your experience, ask questions and receive feedback from the Maestros.

SAFETY: Please take the information below very seriously. In the event of an emergency, please be aware that our center is located approximately 40 minutes away from Iquitos, accessible via a combination of road and boat transportation. While emergencies are rare, we are well-prepared to handle any unforeseen circumstances. To ensure your safety during your stay, we kindly ask that you complete the medical questionnaire honestly when submitting your application. Our shamans will work closely with you to ensure your well-being throughout your time with us. While Ayahuasca is generally considered safe, there are certain individuals who should refrain from taking it. We discourage individuals with heart disease (heart failure, recent heart attack, angina, valve disease, arrhythmia, uncontrolled hypertension), kidney disease, or schizophrenia from partaking in Ayahuasca ceremonies. Consuming Ayahuasca can induce a highly stimulating experience, potentially increasing blood pressure and heart rate, and temporarily disrupting electrolyte balance. Moreover, it may trigger psychosis in individuals with schizophrenia. The physical stress induced by this medicine is generally manageable for individuals in good health. However, it could pose significant risks, including fatality, for individuals with pre-existing conditions related to blood pressure, heart, or kidneys. Therefore, we kindly request that individuals over the age of 40 (or those who have fully recovered from a past heart attack and are currently healthy) undergo a medical screening by their doctor. This screening should include blood pressure measurement, an electrocardiogram, and blood work to assess liver and kidney function. By adhering to these precautions, you assume full responsibility for any potential harm or adverse effects resulting from consuming Ayahuasca, including the risk of death. In the event that you discover you are not in suitable health to work with this medicine and need to cancel your retreat, we will refund your deposit. Individuals with active prostate cancer should refrain from consuming Ayahuasca, as it can exacerbate the condition by inflaming the prostate. We also ask that you wait 6 months to drink ayahuasca if you have had any surgery that required general anesthesia. A note about menstruation. When women drink Ayahuasca while menstruating, it can intensify PMS symptoms like cramping and heavier flow. The energy of menstruation is also very strong in ceremony space and in some cases can cross the energies of the other Pasajeros in the space affecting their process – especially those who are at the center to participate in Master Plant Diets. We ask that all women who are menstruating during a retreat, please communicate this with the Maestro - while you are bleeding, the Maestros can not give you your personal healing, however, you are more than welcome in the ceremonies. We also ask that you take extra time to be in more solitude during this time and do not approach or enter anyone’s personal space who is at the center for a Master Plant Diet. It is a special experience to bleed while working with the medicine, however, it is strong. Taking time to be alone with your cycle can be extremely profound and deepen your intentions – so we invite you to take advantage of that opportunity by bringing yourself into a deeper ceremony and exploring your own energy in your cabin. Some women love this opportunity and even request food to be delivered to them to really maintain the energy of solitude. We can accommodate this if this feels good for you. About sex. Ayahuasca Retreats and Master Plant Dietas involve fairly strict pre, present, and post-diet requirements. While you are in retreat or dieta, you will be limited to certain foods that keep your body as clean as possible. This helps you to be sensitive and open to the subtleties of the medicine. Some foods, including salt and sugar, can block the effects of this work. The same is especially true for sex. Any kind of sexual activity, including masturbation, should be strictly discontinued during this time. Controlling your mind is not always easy, but you should also do your best to redirect any sexual thoughts you might have toward the work you are here to do. If you do participate in any of these things within your required time restrictions, please let the Maestros know so they can realign your work. If you are committing to a Master Plant Dieta we ask that you really take this information seriously as it can have grave consequences for the overall health of your life. This is not an experience to take lightly and so we ask that you come to this work with respect and commitment to yourself and to your plants. List of Medications to Avoid When Drinking Ayahuasca Antihypertensives/high blood pressure medicine - stop 4 weeks prior to retreat and resume the day you get home. Ayahuasca will impact your blood pressure. Therefore, you mus
